LEARNING
British & International Curriculum
Newton College is an innovative, mixed international school of bilingual education (English-Spanish). It offers a combination of the British curriculum and the international Early Years and Primary programs in these first two stages. In Secondary we also offer a double program including the Spanish curriculum along with the IB Middle Years Program while in Sixth Form students can choose between two different pathways: the International Spanish Program or the IB Diploma Program. The school is a member of the IB Program since 1999.
Newton College has its own unique work environment. In addition to the excellent teaching of English and Spanish, the Valencian language is taught from the first year of Primary and German from the sixth year of Primary, providing our students with a multilingual education that enables them to succeed in any international and intercultural environment. In addition, students have the option of learning French, German, Chinese, and Russian as extra-curricular languages.
Newton College is not just another school; it is an educational center that represents the hard work of our studetns, staff, and families. Due to the years of reference, our school has become a focal point, not only from the academic perspective, where the quality of their work is widely proven, but also from those many other aspects that help the school offer a well-rounded education.
Combination of the British Curriculum & International Programmes in Infants & Primary
In the Infant and Primary Years, pupils at Newton College follow a combination of the British curriculum and international programmes. This methodology ensures a solid academic foundation, complemented by the development of emotional and social skills which are fundamental to the holistic growth of the pupil.
Through the British curriculum, students develop strong language skills, while the international programmes promote collaborative work and intercultural understanding, enabling students to acquire a broad and varied approach to learning.
Middle Years Programme (MYP) at Secondary level
During the Secondary stage, from age 11 to 16, Newton College adopts the Middle Years Programme (MYP), a methodology that focuses on fostering critical thinking and the skills needed to address real-world problems. MYP seeks to establish a connection between what students learn in the classroom and their personal experiences, allowing them to see the practical value of the knowledge they acquire.
Students explore global concepts, developing a deep understanding of different disciplines and promoting interdisciplinary learning. This approach prepares students to face the academic and personal challenges they will face in future stages, while acquiring an open and adaptive mindset.
International Spanish Programme & IB Diploma in Bachillerato
In Bachillerato, Newton College offers two complementary programmes: the International Spanish Programme and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma.
The International Spanish Programme guarantees that students acquire the skills required by the Spanish education system, ensuring access to both national and international universities. On the other hand, the IB Diploma offers a rigorous preparation in different areas of knowledge, encouraging autonomous learning and research.
This programme is especially valued by universities all over the world, as it guarantees that students have the opportunity to study at the highest level.
The combination of the two programmes allows students to access comprehensive and challenging learning that is tailored to their academic interests and aspirations.
Multilingual Education
Newton College is committed to multilingual education from the earliest years of schooling. Multilingualism not only facilitates the acquisition of additional languages, but also helps pupils to develop higher cognitive skills, such as mental flexibility and problem-solving abilities.
In addition to English, pupils have the opportunity to learn other languages from an early age, including Valencian and German, which enriches their academic and cultural education.
Valencian language from Primary 1 & German from Primary 6
Newton College incorporates the teaching of the Valencian language from Year 1, encouraging respect and appreciation of local culture and traditions. From Year 6 onwards, students begin to learn German as a third language.
This early exposure to several languages aims to prepare students for communication in a globalised world, giving them the tools to adapt to multicultural contexts and broaden their personal and professional opportunities.
Extracurricular Languages
Newton College also offers a wide range of languages as extra-curricular activities, including French, German, Chinese and Russian. These activities are designed to enrich pupils’ learning and enable them to explore new cultures and improve their communication skills.
By offering a wide range of additional languages, the school encourages curiosity, interest in other cultures and confidence in communicating in different contexts.
Differences between the International Curriculum & the Spanish Curriculum
The educational approach at Newton College combines the best of the British and international curricula, offering an alternative to traditional Spanish education. This difference is evident in several aspects, both at a methodological level and in the content taught. In the international curriculum, a language-centred pedagogy and an immersive educational method are promoted. The learner is guided to explore, question and discover, with the teacher acting as a facilitator rather than a transmitter of knowledge. This approach fosters essential skills such as critical thinking, collaboration and problem solving.
The Spanish curriculum tends to be more structured and standardised, with an emphasis on the acquisition of specific knowledge and more exam-centred assessments. At Newton College, assessments are based on a continuum approach in which students are assessed holistically, considering both their academic skills and other abilities that are also important for their academic and professional future.
