Regardless of the option chosen, our goal is to teach our students how to participate effectively in an ever more globalised society.
The Diploma Programme is a stimulating and demanding international curriculum that is taught as a two-year course and is aimed at students aged 16 to 19. The qualification is recognised by prestigious universities around the world.
The Diploma Programme offers students more than just knowledge; it prepares them for university and encourages them to:
- Ask complex questions
- Learn how to learn
- Develop a solid personal and cultural identity.
- Develop the ability to understand and communicate with people from other countries and cultures.
The curriculum contains six groups of subjects and a common core consisting of three independent components.
The students take their preferred six subjects among those available. Students normally take three subjects at a high level (240 hours per subject) and another three at a medium level (150 hours per subject). Students can enrol in the following subjects and levels: Biology HL, Chemistry ML, Business Management HL, English A HL, Spanish B HL, Environmental Systems ML, Geography ML, Mathematics ML, Mathematical Studies ML, Visual Arts HL, Physics HL, Spanish A HL, German B ML, Mandarin Chinese ML and Cinema ML.
An internal and external exam is held after two years of the programme have been completed, to assess individual performance in relation to the targets set for each subject. The students at our school are enrolled in external IB exams in the May examination session. The three components of the common axis (Monograph, Theory of Knowledge and Creativity, Activity and Service) are compulsory, and form the central core of the philosophy behind the Diploma Programme. They are also a fundamental requirement to obtain this international qualification.
Extended Essay: The course taken to prepare for the Extended Essay, which should be no more than 4,000 words, offers our students the opportunity to research a topic of particular interest to them, whilst familiarising them with independent research and the type of academic writing that they are expected to produce at university.
Theory of Knowledge (ToK): This is a course that combines various subjects as a way of developing a coherent, integrated approach to learning by exploring the nature of knowledge in different disciplines, and stimulating the appreciation of other cultural perspectives.
Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS): By participating in the “School Creativity, Activity and Service” component, our students are encouraged to take part in artistic, sporting and community service activities, promoting their knowledge and appreciation of life outside of their academic environment.
The IB diploma is a passport to enter higher education. It is in this spirit that Laude Newton College combines different key factors in its unique programme. This is the result of successfully combining the Diploma Programme and the Spanish Programme, to prepare our students to obtain the Diploma Certificate and to have optimal preparation and results in their Entrance Exam to Spanish Universities.
